By the water

We went to Willow Creek

December 25, 2025 0 149

Willow Creek does not announce itself. It does not have badlands drama or city park bustle. It exists quietly, doing its own thing, and expects you to notice. Jess does. The dogs are less sure at first, but they are willing to investigate.

Malcolm steps into the grass like someone entering a library. Careful, observant, respectful. Murdock immediately decides this is an open concept adventure zone and begins exploring at speed. Maizekine disappears into the willows and reappears seconds later with a look that suggests she has learned something important and chosen not to share it.

The creek itself winds through the landscape with a kind of patient confidence. Water moves stones the way it always has, slowly, persistently, without fuss. Jess follows the bends, eyes scanning the gravel bars and shallow edges. This is a place for looking closely. For kneeling. For getting wet cuffs and cold fingers.

Willow Creek stones are subtle. They do not sparkle for attention. Greys layered with quiet pattern. Soft greens that only show themselves when wet. Smooth shapes that fit the hand just right. Jess picks one up, turns it over, wets it in the creek. The colour deepens. It is a small revelation, and exactly the sort of thing she came for.

Malcolm watches with calm interest. He understands that this is serious work. Murdock splashes into the water to “help,” sending ripples through Jess’s careful inspection zone. Maizekine takes this as a cue to sprint along the bank, scattering birds and declaring the expedition a success.

There is a rhythm to this kind of searching. Walk. Stop. Look. Crouch. Repeat. The dogs settle into it in their own ways. Malcolm stays near Jess, occasionally checking in. Murdock patrols upstream and downstream, convinced danger could emerge at any moment. Maizekine commits to enthusiasm, alternating between zoomies and sudden, thoughtful pauses.

Jess finds a cluster of stones nestled together, smoothed by years of water. She sorts gently, selecting one, then another, rejecting more than she keeps. Willow Creek rewards restraint. The best pieces are the ones that ask quietly to come home.

The dogs take breaks in the grass. Malcolm lies down with dignity. Murdock pretends not to be tired. Maizekine rolls onto her back, legs in the air, declaring herself temporarily unavailable for work. Jess smiles. Expeditions are better when everyone is honest about their limits.

There is a sense of privacy here that feels rare. No crowds. No hurry. Just the sound of water and wind moving through the willows. Jess thinks about how many stones have passed through this creek, how many stories they carry without ever telling. It makes choosing a few feel like a conversation rather than a harvest.

At one point, Murdock alerts the group to something significant. It is a shadow. Maizekine investigates and decides it is harmless. Malcolm remains unimpressed. Jess finds another stone nearby, this one heavier, with a promising shape. It joins the others in her pocket.

As the afternoon wears on, the light shifts. Stones change character. What looked flat earlier gains depth. Jess revisits spots, sees new things. This is the reward for slowing down. The dogs, muddy and content, seem to understand.

When they finally turn back, pockets are modestly heavier and spirits are light. Willow Creek has offered what it had, and Jess has listened. The dogs shake off water and grass, marking the end of the workday.

Back at the vehicle, Malcolm settles in first, satisfied. Murdock takes one last look at the creek, already planning his return. Maizekine curls up, damp and triumphant. The rocks ride home quietly, future possibilities wrapped in patience.

Willow Creek fades behind them, unchanged, waiting for the next set of careful eyes and curious paws.
